Week of October 27

Hi everyone,

It's our first five-day week in quite a long time and it's difficult to believe that it's already the last week of October. Here is what I have planned:

Computers 1
We will continue working in Excel with daily activities. At the end of the week, students will be making surveys and polling their classmates and then creating charts with the results. There will be no outside homework this week.

Business Concepts
We will complete chapter 5 this week, over budgeting. This is a very quick chapter, but it contains a great deal of valuable information. We will be doing notes and activities Monday-Wednesday, reviewing on Thursday and taking a test over the chapter on Friday. All chapter study guides will be due on Wednesday. Students will also be creating a budget for their life after high school, including shopping for a car and a place to live.

Business Law
This week we will start chapter 5 over civil law. Students will learn about the different types of civil law and will examine several cases as examples of each. There should be no outside homework this week.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one.

Week of October 20

Hi everyone,

Another four-day week with students off all day on Friday. Here is what I have planned for the first week of the second quarter:

Computers 1
We will start using Excel this week. Students will be introduced to the basics of the program and we will start creating a spreadsheet together. Over many years of teaching this class, students often prefer Excel over Word and typically get higher grades. There will be no outside homework or tests this week.

Business Concepts
On Monday, we will review chapter 4 over taxes. On Tuesday, students will take a test over the chapter and I will collect chapter notes. On Wednesday and Thursday, students will watch a movie about avoiding scam artists.

Business Law
This week we will watch the movie 12 Angry Men and complete several activities relating to the  movie and its content.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one!

Week of October 13

Hi everyone,

I hope you are finding somewhere to curl up and relax during this dreary long weekend. Here is what I have planned for next week, which is the last week of first quarter.

Computers 1
On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will review for a test over project 3 in Word. On Thursday, we will take the test and it will be the final grade for first quarter. Friday will be a makeup day for students to finish up any missing work before the quarter ends.

Business Concepts
We will continue with taxes this week. Students will learn how to fill out 1040EZ forms to file their taxes. We will be doing several examples in class. Later in the week, we will discuss a variety of other taxes, including sales and excise taxes. At the end of the hour on Friday, all chapter 4 study guides will be due, and they will be the last grades for the quarter.

Business Law
This is the final week for the criminal trial projects. On Monday and Tuesday, students will continue to work in class on their projects. On Thursday and Friday, groups will present their projects to the class. This will be the final grade for first quarter.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one.

Week of October 6

Hi everyone,

Here is what I have scheduled for the upcoming four-day week:

Computers 1
We will continue working on creating business letters with letterheads. There will be no outside homework this week.

Business Concepts
We will begin chapter 4, covering income taxes. Students will learn about how taxes are taken out of paychecks and will fill out W-4 forms. There will be no outside homework this week.

Business Law
On Monday, we will review chapter 4 over criminal law. On Tuesday, students will take a test over the chapter and I will collect chapter notes. On Wednesday and Thursday, students will work on their criminal trials projects. These projects will be due sometime the week of October 13, with presentations also occurring that week. I should have a more definite due date in the next blog post.

I think that's it for this week. I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend!
