Week of December 8

Hi everyone,

I don't quite know what to tell you about the plans for this week. My mom passed away early this morning after a short battle with cancer. I find myself mourning my mom and my best friend. I will be out all week. I will return next Monday to help students be prepared for final exams.

Computers classes will be watching movies and doing activities planned by Mrs. Lay, another VCHS business teacher.

Business concepts students will continue learning about credit and watching a movie about debt. They will take notes on Tuesday and Wednesday and will take an open-note test over the chapter on Thursday.

Business law students will work on debate preparation all week. They will be writing debate briefs and preparing for the actual debates, to be held on December 15.

I don't have grades updated in TeacherEase. I sincerely apologize.  I will do my best to get those in this week when I have some free time.

Take care,

MD

Week of December 1

Hi everyone,

I can't believe I'm writing a blog post for the month of December and it is almost the end of the semester. There are three weeks left until exams and Christmas break. Here is what I have planned for the upcoming week:

On Monday, we will start chapter 7 over the use of credit. Students will look at credit card statements and credit card offers, and will learn about the minimum payment trap. On Friday, they will watch a documentary called In Debt We Trust. There will be no outside homework this week.

On Monday, we will review chapter 6 over contract offer and acceptance. On Tuesday, students will take a test over the chapter and turn in their notes. On Wednesday and Thursday, we will take notes over chapter 8 which covers the requirement of consideration in contracts. Week of November 24

Hi everyone,

I want to apologize to anyone using TeacherEase to look at student grades. The internet at school was off/on all last week and I wasn't able to input my grades as usual. Grades for all classes, with the exception of business law, are now completely up to date. I will have business law grades in by tomorrow afternoon. Sorry for the inconvenience.

We have a very short week this week. Students will only be in classes on Monday, as Tuesday will be a school-wide activity day with volleyball, pickleball, movies, etc. In all classes, we will just be wrapping things up before break. I will have extra credit assignments available in Computers 1.

I think that's it for this week. I hope you all have a restful and wonderful Thanksgiving break!

On Friday, most of the junior class will be gone on a career field trip.

Here is what I have planned, but I'm expecting this to be more flexible than usual:

We will continue creating spreadsheets in Excel using basic formulas. There will be no outside homework.

Students will work on their checking packets all week. Due date is still tentative but will not be this week. Students receive participation points each day for working in class.

Week of August 25

Hi everyone,

Well, we managed to survive the first week. It was a hot one, but I think it should cool down a bit by the end of this week. Last week, I had intended to jump right in and start covering material in all of my classes. However, I forgot that I planned to give a pre-test in order to measure student progress over the semester. So, last week was spent going over expectations and procedures and pre-testing. This week, we can really get started. Here is what I have planned:

Computers 1
We will start by completing a flyer in Word together. I'll demonstrate everything step-by-step while students work along with me. Later in the week, students will complete study guides for the chapter and complete flyers on their own. Students will be introduced to a variety of formatting techniques available in Word.

Business Concepts
On Monday, I will pass out the study guide packet for this chapter. On Friday, study guides 1 and 2 will be due at the beginning of class. This week we will discuss wants vs. needs, goods vs. services, different types of world economies, and the concept of supply and demand. Students will be taking notes and completing activities each day.

Business Law
On Monday, I will pass out the study guides for this chapter. These study guides will not be due until Tuesday, September 2 at the beginning of the hour. This week we will discuss the creation of laws, different types of laws, and the importance of ethics. On Monday and Tuesday, students will be given a condensed Supreme Court case and asked to create a brief. A case brief pulls out only the most important information; basically it is a snapshot of the case as a whole. This will be completed in class. On Thursday, students will start watching a movie about Bernie Madoff and his infamous Ponzi scheme. Early next week students will be writing about what they watched.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one.

Week of August 18

Hi everyone,

Thanks for stopping by my classroom blog.

In all classes, Tuesday will be spent on a school-wide event where students will be taught the expectations for the school year: Responsible, Respectful, and Ready. The day will end with everyone on the footfall field taking part in a variety of fun activities. On Wednesday, I will hand out the syllabus for each class and let everyone know what to expect during the semester.

For Business Concepts and Business Law, students are required to bring their handbook, writing utensil and notebook. For Computers 1, students are only required to bring their handbook.

Business Concepts
On Thursday,  we will be starting chapter 1, about the economy, specifically needs vs. wants and goods vs. services. We will be taking notes in class and completing activities related to the content. Study guides for the chapter will be passed out on Thursday, and will be due sometime next week. I will give a more specific date in next week's blog post.

Computers 1
This week we will be starting a project in Word about creating flyers including formatting such as borders, font colors and effects, and picture styles.

Business Law
This week, we will start chapter 1 over the definition of law and how it is created. Students will read an actual U.S. Supreme Court case and create a brief (summary) of the case. There should not be any outside homework.

That should be it for this week. Have a good one!

Week of March 24

Hi everyone,

I will not be at school on Monday. Here is what I have planned for the first week of the fourth quarter:

Computers 2
On Monday, students will be paired up and given one class period to interview their partners and create a short PowerPoint sharing the partner's likes/dislikes and future plans. Business Concepts
On Monday, students will read an article about student loans and complete an accompanying worksheet. On Tuesday, we will start discussing the importance of budgeting. This will continue the rest of the week, with students viewing sample budgets and beginning a budget for life after high school. This chapter is quite short and as a result, chapter study guides will be due on Friday for 4th and 6th hours and on Monday for 9th hour (we have 11:45 dismissal on Friday).

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one.

Week of March 17

Hi everyone,

This week will likely be a bit crazy. I'm one of the directors for the high school play scheduled for March 21 and 22. I'll be out all day setting up for the play on Wednesday. Hope you can come out and see The Mouse That Roared! The students have been working very hard the last few months to put on a great performance.

Here is what I have planned for this week:

Computers 2
I decided not to start Publisher last week, because many students needed more time to finish their PowerPoint projects. This week, we will view each student's PowerPoint in class. The remainder of the week, students will watch a movie about Steve Jobs and learn about some Web 2.0 tools they can use for a variety of projects. There will be no homework this week.

Business Concepts
We will continue with taxes this week. Students will complete review sheets and learn about other types of taxes, such as excise and sales taxes. While I'm working on the play Wednesday, students will watch Shark Tank, which has turned into one of their favorite activities. They really get into the different business ideas. On Thursday, we will review the taxes chapter and on Friday students will take a test over the chapter and turn in their notes.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one!

Week of March 10

Hi everyone,

We have two weeks left in the third quarter. The original ending date was pushed back a week due to the number of snow days. Here is what I have planned for this week:

Computers 2
Students will work on their individual PowerPoints Monday-Wednesday. Any student who needs additional time to complete his/her project will need to arrange to come in during enrichment and use the computers. After I have graded all of the projects, they will be shown to the class. I'm not sure if we will get to that this week, but if not we will see them early next week.

On Thursday and Friday,we will do some fun computer activities before we start Publisher next week. There will likely be some extra credit involved.

Business Concepts
This week is all about taxes. Students will fill out a W-4 form and 1040EZs. Just a reminder to bring in W-2s. Students can do their taxes in class. 4.1 and 4.2 study guides will be due on Friday.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one.

Week of March 3

Hi everyone,

Hopefully, this will be our last snow day of the school year. I think everyone is just ready for spring at this point. Here is what I have scheduled for the week:

Computers 2
Students are working on their individual PowerPoint projects. The project can be on just about any topic, and students seem to enjoy working on them and being creative. The project is worth 120 points. At the end of the week, I'll see what kind of progress everyone has made to determine if they need more class time to work next week.

Business Concepts
On Tuesday, we will review chapter 3. On Wednesday, there will be a test over the chapter and I will collect notes. On Thursday, we will start the next chapter over taxes. There should not be any outside homework this week. Students are encouraged to bring their W-2s to class and fill out their tax return.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one.

Week of February 24

Hi everyone,

Progress reports should be sent out sometime this week. I have all grades fully updated in TeacherEase. We still have four weeks left in the third quarter, so there is plenty of time to improve grades, if needed. Here is what I have scheduled this week:

Computers 2
Students will continue working with audio/video within PowerPoint. After finishing this chapter, each student will create a PowerPoint on the topic of his/her choice. This will be a large project, worth at least 100 points, so I'm encouraging students to begin thinking of topics now.

Business Concepts
We didn't finish the second half of section 2 notes last week, so students can't turn in the section 2 study guide on Monday, as scheduled. They will now be due Tuesday at the beginning of class.

Last week, each student started writing an essay on the career of his/her choice.  Some students finished on Friday, but most did not, so we will continue working on those after doing notes on Monday.

On Tuesday, I will be out all day for doctors appointments. On Tuesday and Wednesday, students will watch a movie about current scams of which they should be aware.

On Thursday and Friday, we will take section 3 notes, fill out an application, and look at the characteristics of a strong job interview. The following Monday, March 3, we will review and then take a test over the chapter on that Tuesday.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one.

Computers 2
On Tuesday, we will review the second PowerPoint chapter. On Wednesday, we will take a test over chapter 2. On Thursday, we will start the last PowerPoint chapter together and continue through the end of the week.

Business Concepts
Last week, I considered starting chapter 3 before the long weekend, but decided that was not the best idea. Instead, we watched an episode of Shark Tank on Thursday. All of the classes seemed to enjoy it and hopefully we will have time to watch another episode in the future.

On Tuesday, we will start chapter 3 over careers and searching for jobs. Students will pick two careers to research and see how they match up with their expectations. We will be taking notes throughout the week and completing the career research.

Students will also complete a job application for Subway to learn tips about how an application should be filled out. Unfortunately, students cannot submit the application to the Vandalia Subway as they require applicants to fill them out in the store.

Study guides 3.1 and 3.2 will be due on Monday, February 24.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one.

Week of February 10

Hi everyone,

Several things on the schedule this week will be repeats from last week due to the snow days. If we can make it through a week without having to take a day off, here is what I have planned:

Computers 2
Students will continue making PowerPoints including techniques using shapes, WordArt, and animations. No test this week.

Business Concepts
Classes last week were a bit off due to the early dismissal on Tuesday. Because of that, 9th hour 2.1 and 2.2 study guides will be due at the beginning of the hour on Monday. All other classes turned them in last week. On Monday, all classes will finish making their posters about consumer problems. On Tuesday, we will review and on Wednesday, we will take a test over chapter 2 and I will collect notes. On Thursday, we will start chapter 3, over career exploration and job searches. Friday is a half day and I will only see one of my business concepts classes, so we will probably just watch a movie.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one.

Week of February 3

Hi everyone,

Last week went fairly smoothly. The kids were all on their best behavior while I wasn't feeling well, which I really appreciate. Here is what I have planned for this week:

Computers 2
We will start the next chapter in PowerPoint together, incorporating some new techniques with shapes and animations. There will be no outside homework.

Business Concepts
On Monday, we will take notes and look at issues of Consumer Reports (which we didn't get to last week, as planned.) On Tuesday, we will take notes and students will start posters about common consumer complaints. On Wednesday, we will take notes and continue work on the posters. Study guides 2.1 and 2.2 will be due Wednesday at the beginning of class. On Thursday, study guide 2.3 will be due and we will review. On Friday, we will take a test over chapter 2 and I will collect chapter notes.

I think that's all for this week. Have a good one!

Week of January 27

Hi everyone,

Well, this week should be interesting. As all of my classes know, I have MS. It doesn't usually affect my teaching other than some handwriting issues and occasional balance/walking problems. And my need to keep my classroom quite cool as some of your children may have mentioned!

The reason I'm mentioning it now, is that I have been receiving a pretty massive dose of IV steroids the last couple of days to treat some issues I've been having related to the MS. My last dose is Monday before my first class. Sometimes after an infusion, I do okay and other times it can get pretty awful. I have every intention of being at school, but if I can't make it through and need to go home, the plans may change slightly. The schedule below is what I would like to accomplish if all goes smoothly. If it's bumpier than planned there may be slight changes, but I will do my best to stick to the following:

Computers 2
On Monday, students will do another PowerPoint activity choosing their own design theme, fonts, etc. On Tuesday, we will review for the first test and on Wednesday, students will take a test over the first project. All tests in this class have two parts: a written portion and a production portion. All written portion questions come from the reading guide which students completed in class and can take home to use as a study guide. For the production portion, students will create PowerPoints using the techniques they learned in this chapter. On Thursday, students will watch a movie about technology.

Business Concepts
We will start chapter 2 on Monday, which covers consumer protection laws and making smart buying decisions. On Monday and Tuesday, we will do notes and students will work in groups on PowerPoints about identity theft. On Wednesday, we will continue notes and look at issues of Consumer Reports magazine. On Thursday, students will read an article about Facebook privacy on the internet.

Thursday is the reward field trip for students with zero referrals, zero tardies, and no more than two absences during the first semester. I will be one of the chaperones. Students who attend the field trip are not responsible for making up work missed in my class that day. They deserve it! Also, Friday is parent/teacher conferences. I look forward to meeting those of you who are able to drop in.

I think that's it for this week. Remember, if you ever have any questions/comments, please feel free to e-mail me at mdunn@vandals.k12.il.us

Week of January 20

Hi everyone,

I have graded 150+ papers today and will be putting the first grades of the semester into TeacherEase this evening. This week and next will be four-day weeks due to MLK day and parent/teacher conferences. Here is what I have planned for this week:

Computers 2
Students will continue to work in PowerPoint, becoming familiar with the workspace and adding design elements and transitions. No test this week.

Business Concepts
On Tuesday, we will cover the last section in chapter 1, over supply and demand. On Wednesday, study guides 1.3 and 1.4 will be due. We will review for the test that day. On Thursday, students will take a test over chapter 1. I will also collect notes that day. On Friday, I will be at a PBIS conference and will likely leave a movie for students to watch.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one!

Week of January 13

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone enjoyed their snow days. We will try this again from the top: here is what I have planned for this week:

In all classes, on Monday I will hand out the syllabus for each class and let everyone know what to expect during the semester.

Business Concepts 1
On Tuesday,  we will be starting chapter 1, about the economy. We will be taking notes in class and completing activities related to the content. I do grade notes at the end of each chapter. Study guides for the chapter will be passed out on Wednesday, with the first two sections being due Friday.

Computers 2
This week we will be starting the first project in PowerPoint, covering basic tools and commands. We will complete the first activity together. There will be no outside homework.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one.

Week of January 6

Hi everyone,

It looks like tomorrow we will actually be having school, so I decided to make my first post of the semester. I hope everyone enjoyed their snow days. Thanks for stopping by the blog, which I usually update on Saturday or Sunday with information about the upcoming week. This week's post will have a short description of each class as well as the schedule for the first week.

On Thursday, I will hand out the syllabus for each class and let everyone know what to expect during the semester.

Business Concepts 1
This class is considered a consumer education credit. Students will learn about real-life scenarios, such as finding a job, making smart buying decisions, filing taxes, using a checkbook, using credit cards, etc. The class is one semester in length and is a graduation requirement.

On Friday, we will start chapter one, which covers consumers and their role in the economy. There will be no outside homework for this week.

Computers 2
This class covers both Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Publisher. Students will learn the basics of PowerPoint, including sounds, animations, and timings during the first quarter. Publisher will be introduced during the second quarter when students create flyers, brochures, and newsletters. The class is one semester in length and is an elective. There will not be work to take home for this class, as it is all completed in the computer lab. However, students will be responsible for studying for tests. I haven't taught this class since I did my student teaching...nine years ago! Hopefully, I'm not too rusty.

On Friday, we will start with the first chapter in PowerPoint, working through the activity as a class.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one.
