Week of December 13-17

Hi everyone,

This will be my last schedule post for the semester. I will post grades one last time on Monday, December 13. We will then have one full week left and then two days of final exams. Report cards will be sent home in early January, I believe.

Here is the schedule for this week:

Business Concepts 2
We will play the simulation game provided by Junior Achievement, JA Titan, Monday-Wednesday. The winning team each day will receive 5 extra points per person. On Thursday, we will correct tests from throughout the semester and on Friday we will continue reviewing for the final exam. The final exam will be comprised of test questions from previous tests. All questions will be multiple choice, matching, or true/false. There are no short answer questions.

Business Concepts 1
On Monday, we will take three slides of notes on mortgages and complete a worksheet about choosing a mortgage. Chapter 19 study guides will be due at the beginning of the hour on Tuesday. We will correct them in class and review for the quiz. On Wednesday, we will have a quiz over chapter 19 and I will collect chapter notes. On Thursday, we will correct tests from throughout the semester and on Friday we will continue reviewing for the final exam. The final exam will be comprised of test questions from previous tests. All questions will be multiple choice, matching, or true/false. There are no short answer questions.

Business Math
On Monday, I will assign an extra credit assignment. These problems will be due on Wednesday at the beginning of class. All week we will be reviewing for the final exam. Students received a study guide in class today and we will work through it together all week. The study guide will be checked for completion and is worth 40 points. The study guide was made directly from the final exam and includes everything necessary to do well on the exam.

Business Law
On Monday, we will take an open-note test over chapter 8. On Tuesday and Wednesday students will participate in mini-debates. On Thursday, we will correct tests from throughout the semester and on Friday we will continue reviewing for the final exam. The final exam will be comprised of test questions from previous tests. All questions will be multiple choice, matching, fill-in-the-blank (with a word bank) or true/false. There are no short answer questions.

I think that does it for this semester. I will post grades on Monday. Happy holidays to everyone!

Week of December 6-10

Hi everyone,

We are two full weeks away from semester exams. These will be two very busy weeks as we work to get everything accomplished before break. I will have grades posted sometime on Monday. Here is the schedule for this week.

Business Concepts 2
On Monday and Tuesday we will finish up the chapter notes. Study guides 1 and 2 are due on Monday. Study guides 3 and 4 will be due on Wednesday. On Tuesday, students will give brief presentations on their PowerPoints from last week. On Wednesday, we will review for the test, and on Thursday we will take the test and I will collect chapter notes. If necessary to fit everything in, the test could possibly be pushed back to Friday.

Business Concepts 1
On Monday, we will finish up the chapter notes. On Tuesday study guides 3 and 4 will be due and we will review for the test. Students will receive their study guides back before they leave class that day. On Wednesday, we will take the test and I will collect notes. On Thursday and Friday we will take notes for a very brief chapter on savings accounts.

Business Math
We will cover sections 4.7 and 4.8 Monday-Wednesday. On Thursday, we will review and on Friday we will take a quiz over sections 4.6-4.8. There will be daily homework assigned Monday-Thursday.

Business Law

I think that's it for this week, it will be a busy one. I'm sure everyone is counting down the days until Christmas break!

Week of November 29 - December 3

Hi everyone,

Here are the grades as of November 24th:

Believe it or not, we only have three full weeks left in the semester. Now is the time to get grades up or keep them up. Here is the schedule for the upcoming week:

Business Concepts 2
We will start chapter 10 over marketing this week. This is the last chapter we will cover in this class. There will be daily activities, but no take-home work planned.

Business Concepts 1
We will begin chapter 18 over credit cards. There will be worksheets assigned on Monday and Tuesday, but students should be able to finish these in class.

Business Math
We will cover section 4.5 on Monday, review on Tuesday, and have a test over sections 4.1-4.5 of chapter 4. On Thursday and Friday, we will complete sections 4.6 and 4.7. Daily work will be assigned. Many students in this class are not turning in daily work, which is why many of the grades are so low. It is very, very important that homework gets completed and turned in, as many students must have this class to graduate this spring.

Business Law
We will begin chapter 6 over contracts. Students will complete a case brief on Monday and Tuesday and we will begin discussing contract scenarios on Wednesday. There should not be any outside homework.

I think that's it for this week. Please e-mail me if you have any questions.

Week of November 22-24

Hi everyone,

I do not have grades to post this week. Honestly, after Tuesday, neither teacher nor students got much accomplished. Tammy, we will miss you and your smile in 7th hour.

Thankfully, this week is a short one and I hope the days off will be restful and refreshing for everyone. It has been a difficult week for many of us.

For the short week, this is what I have planned:

Business Concepts 2
Finish the movie we started last week and write the essay on Dave Thomas and Sam Walton.

Business Concepts 1
Review on Monday and take a test on Tuesday over checking accounts. There are no notes to turn in, as students completed reading guides at the beginning of the chapter and they have already been graded. Wednesday is scheduled as a free day/makeup day for anyone who missed the test.

Business Math
We will continue chapter 4 this week, covering the second half of section 4.3 on Monday and 4.4 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Business Law
We will finally get to watch A Civil Action. It should take the entire three days to finish.

I think that's it for this week. I will probably post grades on Friday of next week. I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Week of November 15-19

Hi everyone,

This quarter is flying by. Believe it or not, we only have five weeks until Christmas break. I have been grading this weekend, and will post grades Monday morning or afternoon. For now, here is the schedule for this week.

Business Concepts 2
We will watch a movie on Monday and Tuesday about a famous entrepreneur. On Wednesday, students will write a one-page essay about what they saw. On Thursday, we will start chapter 10 about marketing. There should not be any outside homework this week.

Business Concepts 1
On Monday, we will have guest speakers from Greenville College provide information about affording a college education. Tuesday and Wednesday we will work on checking packets in class and packets will be due at the beginning of class on Thursday or Friday (I want to see what progress everyone has made before I set a specific due date.) These packets are worth 150 points and can make or break this quarter's grade, so it is very important that they are completed. We will then begin reviewing for a test over checking accounts, to be taken next week on Tuesday, November 23rd.

Business Math
We are continuing chapter 4 this week. No test is planned but homework will be assigned daily. I will also be making phone calls home this week for those students who are failing this class and must have the math credit to graduate.

Business Law
We will review on Monday and take a test Tuesday over chapter 5 on civil law. I will also collect notes on Tuesday. Wednesday-Friday we will watch the movie A Civil Action.

I think that's all this week. I will get grades posted on here tomorrow. Have a great week!

Week of November 1-5

Hi everyone,

I have been grading this weekend, but I will not be at school on Monday, due to a training I am attending. So, I think I will wait until the end of this week and post grades for the first two weeks of second quarter. I don't like to post grades after only one week, as they may be very high or very low due to one assignment or test. You can always e-mail me anytime to find out your child's grade.

Okay, moving on to the schedule for this week:

Business Concepts 2
We will begin chapter 8, over human resources. On Monday, students missing work or needing to make up a test (there are quite a few) will be able to do this during class while I am gone. We will start the notes on Tuesday continuing through the end of the week. We will complete activities in class, but there should not be any other homework, except for the 8.1 study guide to be due on Thursday.

Business Concepts 1
On Wednesday and Thursday of last week, students worked on their chapter 17 reading guides in class. They will work in class again on Monday, with the reading guides due at the end of the hour. On Tuesday, we will start discussing the reading guides and introducing the checking packets. There will be no outside homework during this chapter. All work will be completed in class.

Business Math
On Monday, students will complete the 3.6 problems in the textbook. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will cover section 3.7. On Thursday, students will take a quiz over these two sections only. On Friday, we will start the chapter 4 reading guide.

Business Law
Last week, we finished up the criminal trial presentations. On Monday, students will watch a few old episodes of People's Court to introduce the next chapter over civil law. On Tuesday, we will begin taking notes over the chapter. There should not be any outside homework this week.

I think that's it for the week. Have a good one!

Week of October 25-29

Hi everyone,

Friday marked the end of the 1st quarter. The office will be sending home report cards at the beginning of the week, so I will not be posting grades on here this week. Next weekend I will post the first set of 2nd quarter grades.

Here is the schedule for this week:

Business Concepts 2
We will continue chapter 7 notes this week. Students will do an activity over business ethics at the beginning of the week. 7. 2 study guides are due on Tuesday. We will review for the test on Wednesday and take the chapter test Thursday. I will also collect notes that day.

Business Concepts 1
Monday we will review for the test over budgets. On Tuesday, we will take the test. I will have a sub on Tuesday, so I will collect chapter notes on Wednesday. On Wednesday and Thursday, students will work on reading guides for chapter 17, over checking accounts. These reading guides will be due on Monday, as there is no school on Friday.

Business Math
I have decided to break chapter 3 into two sections to make the material more manageable. We have covered sections 1-4 so far. I plan to cover section 3.5 on Monday along with a review of the chapter. If I feel students are ready, we will take the test over the first five sections on Tuesday. If I don't feel that students are ready, there will be more review on Tuesday with the test on Wednesday. Then, we will cover the last two sections of the chapter later in the week with a small quiz early next week over just those two sections.

Business Law
Students finished their criminal trials papers and PowerPoints at the end of last week. Since I will be gone on Tuesday, we will do the presentations on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. On Monday and Tuesday, we will start discussing civil law. No homework is planned.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one!

Week of October 11-15

Hi everyone,

Here are the grades as of 10/8/10. Click the image for a larger view.

Here is the schedule for the upcoming week.

Business Concepts 2
We will finish up chapter 6 on Tuesday and Wednesday, review on Thursday and take a test on Friday. I will also collect notes that day. 6.1 and 6.2 study guides will be due Wednesday and 6.3 study guide will be due Thursday.

Business Concepts 1
We will finish up the chapter on taxes on Tuesday and Wednesday, review on Thursday and take a test on Friday. I will also collect notes that day. Study guides for sections 2 and 3 will be due on Wednesday and the section 4 study guide will be due on Thursday.

Business Math
We will review chapter 2 on Tuesday and take a test on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday we will work on the chapter 3 reading guide in class. Reading guides will be due Monday, October 18 if not finished in class. There should be no other homework for the week. Students with a D or an F at this time are strongly encouraged to come in for tutoring from 8-8:15 or from 3:15-3:30 any day of the week.

Business Law
On Tuesday, we will review chapter 4 over criminal law. On Wednesday we will take a test over this chapter. I will also collect notes that day. On Thursday and Friday, students will work in small groups on their famous criminal trials projects. Groups and trials were chosen last Friday. Each group will write a paper, create a PowerPoint, and give a short presentation over a famous criminal trial.

I think that's it for this week. Believe it or not, the first quarter is over in a couple of weeks. It is extremely important that students work hard to get grades up (or keep them up) during this time. The quarter grade will count for 40% of the semester grade.

Enjoy the rest of the long weekend and have a great week!

Here is the schedule for this week:

Business Concepts 2
We will begin chapter 6 which covers the process of starting a small business. We will do activities daily with no take-home work planned.

Business Concepts 1
We will begin a chapter covering taxes. Students will learn how to fill out a 1040EZ form this week. There should not be any take-home work and students do not need to bring textbooks to class during this chapter. It is not covered in the textbook, but is something that I think is important to include in the class.

Business Math
We will continue chapter 2, covering sections 4-6 this week with a planned review on Thursday. With no school on Friday or Monday, we will plan to review again Tuesday, October 12 and take a test over chapter 2 on Wednesday, October 13.

Business Law
If all goes smoothly, we are planning to finish the chapter over criminal law this week. I am planning a test on Thursday, with notes collected at that time.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one!

Hi everyone,

I'm grading again this weekend. I will put all of my grades in the computer on Monday and will post grades here Monday night.

This Thursday and Friday, September 30 and October 1 are parent-teacher conferences. On Thursday, conferences will be held from 3-6 p.m. and on Friday from 12:45-3:45. I hope many of you will be able to stop in for a quick visit. It's always nice to see the parents of the students I see every day.

Now for this week's schedule:

Business Concepts 2
We will finish up the notes for chapter 5 on Monday and Tuesday. We will review on Wednesday and take a test on Thursday. I will collect notes the day of the test. Study guides will be due on Wednesday.

Business Concepts 1
We will finish up chapter 9 this week. On Friday, 4th hour turned in 9.1 and 9.2 study guides at the end of the hour. I assigned these study guides to 7th hour to be due Monday. The remaining study guides will be due on Wednesday. On Thursday we will take a test over chapter 9 and I will also collect notes that day.

Business Math
We are continuing with chapter 2 this week. On Monday, we will review the three sections that we have covered. We will continue to try to cover a section a day, with homework problems assigned daily. Still no test this week.

Business Law
On Monday, we will start chapter 4 about criminal law. Students often find this to be the most interesting chapter. We will discuss different types of crimes and look at the Illinois Criminal Code. We will take notes this week, with no take-home work planned.

I think that's it for this week. Have a good one and hope to see some of you at conferences.

Week of September 6-10

Hi everyone,

Here are the grades as of 9/3/10. Click on the image for a larger view. The schedule for the upcoming week is below.

Business Concepts 2
We finished chapter 2 on Friday with a test. Overall, the class did very well. On Tuesday, we will start chapter 3, over international business. We will take notes and complete activities throughout the week, with no test scheduled for the week.

Business Concepts 1
Last week, we finished chapter 1 and now will skip ahead to chapter 15, about consumer protection. We will be looking through issues of Consumer Reports and learning about how to be smart consumers. There will be notes and activities throughout the week, with no test planned.

Business Math
Last week, I had planned to continue with chapter 1. However, with the shortened class periods it was difficult to get much accomplished each day. Instead, students completed review problems so I could assess class strengths and weaknesses. We will jump back into chapter 1 on Tuesday, with homework assignments each night. We may have a test this Friday, but it depends on if I think the class is comfortable enough with the material. If not Friday, then next Tuesday. I don't like to give tests on Mondays.

Business Law
On Friday, we took a test over chapter 1. Scores were fair, which is to be expected on this first test. Generally what I see is that students have had me for business concepts. Many of the test questions in that class are common sense and fairly easy to understand. Business law is a junior/senior level class and it takes a bit more of an effort studying for the test and understanding the material. So, if grades are lower than expected, it's likely a result of the test, but there is plenty of time to turn that around. As for this week, we will watch a movie called Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room to go along with our discussion on business ethics. Students will take a quiz and write a short report about the fall of Enron.

I think that's it for this week. Any questions, please feel free to e-mail me. Hope you enjoying the long weekend!

Business Concepts 2
Study guides will be due on Thursday with a test on Friday over chapter 2. I will also collect chapter notes on Friday.

Business Math
We will continue working through chapter 1 of the textbook. Students should have a daily homework assignment each night, except for Friday.

Business Law
We will finish up the chapter 1 notes this week. Study guides will be due on Wednesday, with a test to follow on Thursday or Friday, depending on how much we get accomplished with the shortened class time. Notes will also be collected on that day.

That's it for this week. Have a good one!

Week of August 23-27

Welcome back everyone! This week's blog post will be a brief summary of each class, as well as what to expect from the semester.

Business Concepts 1
This class is considered a consumer education credit. Students will learn about real-life scenarios, such as finding a job, making smart buying decisions, filing taxes, using a checkbook, using credit cards, etc. The class is one semester in length and is a graduation requirement.

This week, we will be starting chapter 1. Usually, both sections of this class will be on the same schedule. Because of the heat schedule, one class is longer than the other and activities for each class may vary slightly these first two weeks. Study guides for the chapter will be passed out on Wednesday, with the first two sections being due Friday or Monday.

Business Concepts 2
This class is an elective worth 1/2 credit. It covers economic and small business issues. This week, we are covering chapter 2, over economic performance and tracking such data as unemployment, inflation, GDP, etc. We will be doing activities in class and study guides will be passed out on Thursday, to be due sometime next week.

Business Math
This is a math class covering practical math scenarios such as paychecks, taxes, interest rates, depreciation, etc. At the beginning of each chapter, students will complete a reading guide as chapter notes. Each day, we will cover a section of the chapter by covering concepts and working math problems. Students will be given homework from the textbook to work on each night. We started chapter 1 on Tuesday.

Business Law
This is an elective for junior and seniors worth 1/2 credit. The course covers the creation of law at various levels, different types of laws, and the creation of contracts. Students will do writing and critical thinking throughout the semester. On Wednesday, students read an actual U.S. Supreme Court case and are working on creating a brief (summary) of the case.

That should be it for this week. Grades will be posted at the end of next week.

I have been grading this weekend. I will put grades into the grading program tomorrow and post them here tomorrow night. Until then, here is the schedule for the upcoming week:

8th grade computers
Personal-business letters will be introduced this week. Students will type two letters a day, with emphasis on format and accuracy.

Then, we will take the test over the savings chapter on Friday. Study guides will be handed out Monday and due on Wednesday, with some time given to work on them in class.

Web page 2
Students will work on creating their own Flash document on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday-Friday will be catchup time as half of the class will be out for PSAE and field trips during those days.

Schedule edit for business concepts

I usually try to avoid making changes to the planned schedule during the week, so that students/parents only need to check in once per week. But, I have decided to have a test over chapter 1 in business concepts this Friday, January 15. I forgot we will be out of school Monday for MLK day and don't want to test over the material after a 3-day weekend. Just wanted to make everyone aware of the change.
